Mark Branning

MBA, CPHIMS, SrHIMSS

Mr. Branning is a consultant who specializes in health information exchange, patient engagement, interoperability and product positioning. He is also an adjunct professor at National University and serves on committees for both HIMSS eConnecting with Consumers and the San Diego Chamber of Commerce.

Mark Branning has spent 34 years in the healthcare information systems industry and is a consultant specializing in patient engagement, health information exchange (HIE), interoperability, and product positioning. His specialty is getting his customers unstuck and achieving real results on their clinical collaboration initiatives.

Mark’s successful 20-year tenure with IDX/GE included: clinical product launches, spearheading transformational large-scale implementations at Sharp HealthCare and UCSF/Stanford; significantly improving customer satisfaction of the install and support division; and development of interoperability strategies and solutions. He has been an independent consultant for the last 7 years.

Mark’s healthcare IT career began as the user liaison for Dr. Larry Weed’s PROMIS – a pioneering electronic medical record. Dr. Weed is the father of the Problem Oriented Medical Record including SOAP notes. In the mid-1980s, Mark formed a company to market and sell a commercial version of PROMIS.

  • Scripps Health - leading their HIE initiative; advising on patient engagement strategies. The HIE and patient portal are Live.

  • Adjunct Professor, National University; Health Informatics masters. The class Mark developed is known as ‘the-tough-class-in-the-curriculum’, yet the evaluation scores from the students continue to be high.

  • UCSD Extension – online guest lecturer on personal health IT for their healthcare certification program.

  • San Diego State University – annual lecturer on personal health IT for their graduate nursing program.

  • San Diego Community HIE – evaluation of vendors; planning for Scripps connectivity; and patient engagement planning.

  • Sharp – spearheaded their HIE initiative and vendor selection.

  • Health record bank startup - member of the management team. A health bank is a patient-centered solution for coordinating care across all providers.

Advocate for the Adoption of IT Solutions to Improve Healthcare

  • Member of the 12-person HIMSS Connected Patient steering committee

  • Member, San Diego Chamber of Commerce’s Healthcare Committee

  • Active participant at numerous HIMSS Legislative Advocacy days at Sacramento and Washington, D.C.

  • Member of Dave Roberts' (now Supervisor Roberts) 2009 grass-roots team providing input to national healthcare policy.
